Burning Word 4 - The Festival of Poetic Fire!

The Washington Poets Association will celebrate the power of poetry Saturday, April 28th with a dynamic all-day celebration of poetry: Burning Word 4. This year's festival of poetic fire will feature more than 50 talented poets, ranging from renowned award-winning poets to hot new talents you'll be thrilled to discover.

The Paul Gillie Stage in Greenbank Farm's historic Main Barn will showcase over 40 talented poet performers. The WPA's Lifetime Achievement Award for 2007 will be awarded on this stage and the performances of Burning Word's headliners, Canada's first Parliamentary Poet Laureate, George Bowering, and internationally acclaimed poet Naomi Shihab Nye will close the festival on a high note.

The other outstanding Paul Gillie Stage talent includes, in alphabetical order: Toni Bajado, Bruce Beasley, Oliver de la Paz, Danika Dinsmore, Fisher Poets: (Jon Broderick, Erin Fristad, Holly Hughes), Michael C. Ford, Lorraine Healy, Anna Maria Hong, Jack Straw Readers: (Charlie Potts, Howard Robertson, Molly Tenenbaum), Jourdan Keith, Los Nortenos: (Jose Carrillo, Carmen Carrion, Raul Sanchez), Christopher Luna, J.W. Marshall, Terry Martin, Shin Yu Pai, C.E. Putnam, David Rizzi, Judith Roche, Stephen Roxborough, Derek Sheffield, Clemens Starck, Joan Swift, "A Couple of Pearls from Portland": (Cindy Williams Gutierrez & Willa Schneberg), Tyrone Williams, and Youth Speaks Seattle.

Paul Gillie Stage emcees will be Karen Bonaudi, Carmen Carrion, Molly Larson Cook, Paul Nelson and Michael Dylan Welch. The schedule for the Paul Gillie Stage is available here.

A second more intimate performance venue at Greenbank Farm this year is a heated, festival tent housing the new Cascade Stage. The Cascade Stage will showcase the talents of Jim Bodeen, Clark Crouch, Kathleen Flenniken, Pesha Gertler, Arthur Ginsburg, Eric McHenry, Alexandra Oliver, Peter Pereira, Belle Randall, Susan Rich, Roy Seitz, Judith Skillman, Annette Spaulding-Convy and Michael Spence.

Cascade Stage emcees will be Lana Ayers, Denise Calvetti, Nan Harty, Bill Mawhinney, Cynthia Pratt, Aaron Silverberg and Connie Walle.

The new Cascade Stage will not only feature these fine poets but also offer hosted open-mic opportunities. All interested poets will have a chance to read their work beginning bright and early and continuing throughout the day. The schedule for the Cascade Stage is available here.

Beginning at 9 AM the heated Writing Workshop Tent will provide the third festival venue and will host seven 70-minute poetry workshops presented by noted poets and teachers. Workshop presenters include noted poets: Danika Dinsmore, "Walking and Talking Poetics"; Michael C. Ford, "Make-Believe Ball Room"; Christopher Luna, "Investigative Poetics"; Judith Roche, "Inviting the Muse"; Derek Sheffield, "Science as Muse"; Tyrone Williams, "Responsible Writing"; Dr. Susan Zwinger, "Leap, Don't Tiptoe".

Burning Word also hosts a Small Press Fair featuring some of the country's best small presses. Festival-goers will be able to talk with the publishers and buy their books on site. Also featured is a Festival Bookstore featuring the books and CDs of WPA members and Burning Word presenters and performers. There will be book signings and time for community networking. While at Greenbank Farm, festival-goers can enjoy expansive water views, a hike on the miles of beautiful trail, a delicious lunch, dinner or dessert at Whidbey Pies Cafe, or a refreshing beverage in the Beer Garden.

18 miles north of the Clinton Ferry dock.

Ferry Info:
During the day, the boat runs between Mukilteo and Whidbey Island
on the hour and half-hour. After 9 PM it switches to every hour.
